Less than six minutes in, Tsuujou Kougeki ga Zentai Kougeki de Ni-kai Kougeki no Okaasan wa Suki Desu ka? episode features what may be one of the most dreadful lines of dialog that male teenage game enthusiasts could ever imagine hearing: “It’s time to go on lots of fun adventures with your mom.” For many individuals who immerse themselves in game play to get away from the utter normality of their lives, having your mom tag along is both utterly terrifying and self-defeating. That isn’t the only odd angle that this off-kilter isekai series takes, but it is the one which instantly defines the content and sets the stage for what looks to be a light-hearted romp of a totally different variety from this season’s equally-flippant Demon Lord, Retry!.
The main gag here, of course, is that Masato not only cannot get away from his mother, but he is also being overwhelmingly outclassed by her right from the start, and she doesn’t waste much time in showing that. Her mention of the business with the stick suggests that she might not actually be a total stranger to online RPGs, and she does seem to know a bit more about what’s going on here that she has been told that she shouldn’t explain at this point, but the quality of that central gag still stands. Unlike most other isekai situations, this one is also up front about the fact that the world is a game, to the point that the king that Masato and Mamako get their start from even explains it as a beta test, gives them sets of game stats, and laments about having to give out special items up front just as an incentive to get people to play the game. It is also amusingly dodgy about how the whole process of transporting someone into the game actually works, even admitting up front that it cannot explain the process.
As solid as the premise is, the success of the series may depend more on maintaining that sense of humor and ability to play off of common MMORPG characteristics and tropes; the revelation sound effect is yet another neat touch which will no doubt be familiar to old-school gamers, so keep more of that kind of thing coming! The technical merits are nothing special, and I can see the flash of Mamako’s two-sword attacks wearing thin fast. I will reserve judgment on this series until I see how it expands out its cast as Masato assembles his adventuring party, but for now I am cautiously optimistic about it. Okaa-san Online attempts to be somewhat different to its other isekai counterparts by giving the protagonist a choice whether to go into a game world in order to test it or not. And having the protagonist’s mother tag along with him. I’ll let you in on a little secret: This anime was kinda interesting. For the first 5 minutes of the first episode.
Afterwards, it was the same old isekai, only with a MILF involved. This series tries to be funny by using the same old jokes and fails in the most spectacular fashion. I’ll give it credit for accepting what it is though: MMMMORPG – Mom’s Massively Maternal Multiplayer Making-up-with- Offspring Role-Playing Game. Replace “Making-up” with “Making-out” and the title suits this shitshow to a T.
A badass mother who takes care of all the enemies that dare cross paths with her son, characters talking about stats, the boring “I can get this attack when I level up” and hot girls joining the MC’s party are some of the things that go on in this anime. If done well, these things can make for a funny experience but decent direction and execution isn’t what Okaa-san Online is about, you know?
This is a show about an overprotective mother wanting to get closer to her son, and it makes this clear in no uncertain terms from the beginning itself. Add in lots of panty shots, repeatedly failed comedy attempts, some duplicates of other isekai girls and a MILF, and you’ve got whatever this tragedy of a show wanted to be.
Some of the situations that the characters end up in are totally disgusting and not the least bit funny. If someone wants to watch these things, they’d be better off watching porn instead. Masato, the lead character of the series, ends up fondling his mother’s breasts more times than he probably did when she breast-fed him as a baby. Heck, I bet his father didn’t fondle them as much as he’d done in these 12 episodes.
We’re supposed to believe that Mamako, who looks not much older than his son, is the mother. The time that this show is not showing off the curvy body of hers with her son finding ways to end up in situations that would make a happily married couple embarrassed, it goes off on uninteresting adventures and missions that we’ve seen a thousand times over. What makes this even worse are the things that I mentioned in the last paragraph.
We’ve got a few other characters too, if you can even call them characters that is. They’re simply objects of fan-service in between the constantly censored MILF porn. First up is Porta, whose only role is to carry shit around. Then, we’ve got Wise the sage, a short-tempered girl who split up with her mother because of an argument. I’ll give this show some credit for trying to develop a real chemistry between Masato and Wise. Not the anime’s fault that the writing reeks of incompetence, right?
Oh, how JC staff has fallen. From butchering the likes of One Punch Man Season 2 to the sequels to the fantastic Shokugeki no Soma, JC staff have produced some absolute shitshows in comparison to their previous works in the last couple or so years. I think they’re just taking far too many projects and pumping out some absolute crap as a product of that. It’s the same story with the production quality with Okaa-san Online. Neither the animation nor the sound departments are anything but bang average. Shoddily animated sequences and colored manga panels panning in, out, left and right sums up the visual part of this show. The only somewhat well animated scenes are, well, the ones which should belong to a hentai anime. Enough said about the production.
As for the final verdict, do I recommend this anime? If you want to watch a weak MC and his mother end up in socially questionable situations while being surrounded by dull and boring characters who don’t have any entertainment value to them at all, and comedic scenes which are not funny more often than not, who am I to stop you? But I’d suggest you save your time and breath and look around for something better to watch. It’ll hardly take a minute to find something better than this.
